Art of Protest

Ellie Monk · 19/09/2022 ·

Art of Protest

‘Art of Protest’ is a showcase of work from artists living in Jogjakarta, Indonesia. Where many forms of protest are restricted, art is used to raise awareness, express anger, and voice resistance.

Fossil Free Jogja (FFJ) is part of Fossil Free Indonesia, which is a global movement to end the era of fossil fuels and build a community-led world of renewable energy that is equitable for all. FFJ have creatively targeted fossil fuel funding banks through painting a ‘portrait’ of the bank, then spraying ‘Stop Funding Climate Crisis’ over them. Their Earth Day performance was captured via a drone, and depicted a ‘solar panel dance’ with the message that renewable energy is for now and the future. FFJ global climate strike involved creating a huge public mural depicting coal power stations and the words ‘Stop Fake Solutions. People, not Profit’. A selection of work from the ‘Echo Justice’ exhibition that was held at the Soboman 219 Artspace, will also be exhibited. Come and view the work created by activists living on the front line of the Climate Crisis.

The exhibition will be displayed within  One Planet Abingdon, a climate emergency center tucked away in the basement of the Abingdon Museum. Come down and enjoy a slice of homemade cake whilst you view the artwork on show. Opening times: Thurs 22nd – Sat 24th September, 10am – 4pm

Oxfordshire Great Big Green Week

Oxfordshire Great Big Green Week

Residents across Oxfordshire are taking part in a nationwide campaign this September to highlight the need for urgent action on climate and nature.

Taking place between 24 September – 2 October, the climate action campaign known as the Great Big Green Week will see thousands of people across the UK organising local festivals and events. The campaign aims to draw attention to climate change and the destruction of the natural world, while showcasing actions to tackle climate change in local communities.

Last year Oxfordshire hosted over 100 events across the county, including tree planting, a natural dye workshop and a ‘Walk for Life on Planet Earth’. This year, there are lots of activities being planned by Green Arts Oxfordshire Network, Tandem Collective, Community Action Groups Oxfordshire, Oxford Friends of the Earth, Low Carbon Hub and many others.

Oxfordshire Great Big Green Week will be kicking off with a launch event in Bonn Square on Saturday 24th September, where you can expect inspiring speakers, poets and performers alongside information about local charities and groups working towards a more sustainable future for Oxfordshire.

The local theme for this year is ‘energy’, in response to the current energy and cost of living crisis. With prices due to rise again at the start of October, these events aim to raise awareness and highlight some of the ways that we as individuals and communities can work together.
