Climate Justice: The Story of Our Time Exhibition

Ellie Monk · 03/07/2023 ·

Climate Justice: The Story of Our Time Exhibition

Dates: 13 June – 17 July 2023

Opening hours: Tuesday – Sunday, 10am – 4pm

Admission: Free to visit

In April 2023, Green Arts Oxfordshire Network held 3 events as part of Marmalade festival, bringing together Oxfordshire’s cultural organisations, artists and anybody wanting to respond creatively to the climate crisis.

In a session called ‘Climate Justice: The Story of Our Time’ at the Old Fire Station, we explored how creatives can work with climate experts to tell the most compelling stories of our time, and create a better world in the process.

This session was just the start of a much longer, ongoing conversation about how we communicate and advocate for Climate Justice in Oxfordshire. Participants heard from creatives leading change through projects locally and globally. The artworks displayed in this exhibition were created by participants in response to the session, with artist Julia Utreres. Julia has also created a risoprint zine of these artworks, free for you to take home from the Café at the Old Fire Station.

About the artist:

Julia Utreras. Printmaker, visual artist, facilitator.

Their work as an educator focuses in (re)nourishing people’s approach to image-making, encouraging play and experimentation via collages, drawings, and printmaking. They set up and run Common Books, a printing press and collaborative project working across different community groups and institutions in Oxford, facilitating the making of printed matter and the use of alternative methods to create images. Local groups include the Young Women’s Music Project, My Normal, The Old Fire Station, The Bodleian Library and the Ruskin School of Art.

Their visual work is interested in playing with perceptions of the ‘refined’ and ‘unrefined’, and what lies outside the aesthetics of a western lens.

Carbon Literacy Training for Artists & Activists Part B

Event dates: Wednesday 14th June, 5.30pm – 7.30pm & Wednesday 28th June, 5.30pm – 7.30pm. Please attend both sessions.

Learn the most impactful ways to tackle climate change and work together to create a cultural shift through art and culture.

Green Arts Oxfordshire Network has developed a Carbon Literacy Training course for Oxfordshire’s cultural community, certified by the internationally recognised Carbon Literacy Project. To celebrate, GAON is offering Oxfordshire’s artists, activists, musicians, theatre professionals, performers, writers and creative freelancers of all kinds a one-time introductory offer of £10 for a space in the first cohort, limited to 15 people.

This 3-part online Carbon Literacy Course will give you a contextual understanding of what climate change is, the scale of its effects, the most impactful ways to reduce carbon emissions in our sector and what we can do as cultural leaders locally, nationally and globally to work towards net-zero and climate justice.

Carbon Literacy is “An awareness of the carbon dioxide costs and impacts of everyday activities, and the ability and motivation to reduce emissions, on an individual, community and organisational basis.”

The sustainability consultancy firm Jacobs did a study on the effectiveness of Carbon Literacy training, and discovered there is between a 5 and 15% carbon saving per person for those that undertake the training.

You will be certified as Carbon Literate by making an individual pledge and a community pledge of what you can do within your power to make a significant difference to your carbon impact.

Who is this three-part Course aimed at?

This course is designed for Oxfordshire’s arts and cultural sector, for individual creative practitioners as well as staff and volunteers of museums, galleries, theaters, arts centres, festivals, cinemas and other types of cultural organisations and community groups.

This first cohort is specifically for creative practitioners and activists, with a one-time introductory offer of £10. The course has a value of at least £60 per person. If you cannot afford the £10 asked, £5 bookings are available, as well as an option to support us in subsidising these spaces by paying £15.

We ask that you join the Green Arts Oxfordshire Network if you are not a member already. You can sign up for free here: Sign the Green Arts Charter

If you are interested in Carbon Literacy Training for your organisation, please get in touch at contact@greenartsox.co.uk

The course will be delivered online, through an e-learning platform followed by two Zoom sessions with a trainer. You will need access to a computer or tablet for the e-learning, and a good internet connection for the Zoom calls. The Zoom sessions are participatory, including joint working exercises and discussion.

What does this three-part Course involve?

7 hours of learning, broken into manageable and engaging chunks:

  • 3 hours of self-directed e-learning that must be completed before the Zoom sessions.
  • Session Part A (via Zoom), Wednesday 14th June, 5.30pm – 7.30pm
  • Session Part B (via Zoom), Wednesday 28th June, 5.30pm – 7.30pm
  • A ‘Participant Details’ form including 2 action pledges, which will be sent to The Carbon Literacy Project to certify you as Carbon Literate. You will have 1 week after completing Session Part B to send us your form.

By booking a space on this course, you are committing to 7 hours of learning, split over the e-learning platform and 2 Zoom sessions. Please plan to complete the e-learning in advance and attend all sessions. You must complete all sections of the course to be certified as Carbon Literate.

Climate Café

Ellie Monk · 07/04/2023 ·

Climate Café

Climate Cafés offer something different from the usual gatherings of people with interests in climate change. They are facilitated – so you can be sure that there will be space for you to speak. They are not designed to recruit you to do anything or to put you under any pressure. The idea behind them is that talking about climate change is really important – but it is often made more difficult by our feelings of guilt that we are not doing enough, or frustration that others are not doing enough. So Climate Cafés provide a space in which we don’t talk about what we or others are doing or should be doing. We just talk about climate change and how it is making us think and feel.

Everyone is welcome. There’s no charge. We provide the tea, coffee and cake! Climate Cafés are not drop-in events, so please try to arrive in time for the 4pm start (though we won’t turn you away if you’re a few minutes late!).

Everyone who is concerned about the climate crisis is welcome at Climate Cafés, though we don’t advise children attending.

This session is facilitated by Rebecca Nestor and Raia Prokhovnik.

We hope you can join us! In the interest of limiting the scope 3 carbon emissions from this event, please consider public transport or active travel like walking on cycling to travel here, if that is a possibility for you.

Thank you to the Old Fire Station for their support with this event.

This event is part of Marmalade Festival 2023, which takes place in 6 venues across Oxford from 11 to 14 April.

The Old Fire Station will be hosting over 90 events including discussions, performances, film screenings and much more. Topics will include how to learn, homelessness, young people and mental health amongst other subjects.

Culture Shift! A Vision for Greener Audience Travel

Ellie Monk · 07/04/2023 ·

Culture Shift! A Vision for Greener Audience Travel

Museums, music venues, theatres, arts centres and galleries unite! Join Green Arts Oxfordshire Network in a room full of Oxford’s cultural venues to build a creative vision for greener audience travel in our city. Audience travel is the largest source of emissions in the cultural sector, and this session will explore our collective power to create that cultural shift towards lower carbon transport options.

We aim to:

  • Pool what we know about how our audiences travel to us, and where from.
  • Explore sustainable transport options and how we can work together to make these as accessible and appealing as possible.
  • Start the process of developing an attractive online infographic that displays greener travel choices. This will be created and designed by GAON, with some funding support from the RSA, for venues to share with their audiences.

This session will be facilitated by Jeremy Spafford, Director of the Old Fire Station.

Speakers include:
🌱 Caroline Jones, Director & CEO of The Story Museum
🌱 Kim Pickin, Founder and former Director of The Story Museum, GAON Advisory Board Member
🌱 Zuhura Plummer, Oxfordshire Liveable Streets
🌱 Councillor Anna Railton, Cabinet Member for Zero Carbon Oxford and Climate Justice
🌱 Laura Hancock, Broken Spoke Bike Co-op
🌱 Nina Brown, Director of The Tandem Collective, GAON Advisory Board Member

We hope you can join us! In the interest of limiting the scope 3 carbon emissions from this event, please consider public transport or active travel like walking on cycling to travel here, if that is a possibility for you.

Thank you to the Old Fire Station and The Story Museum for their support with this event.
